During the week of March 21, 2022, through March 27, 2022, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.
So far in 2022, there have been 269 DUI arrests compared with 300 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 10.3 percent.
There have been 173 major accidents thus far in 2022 compared with 180 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 3.9 percent.
To date, there were 9 fatal crashes, resulting in 11 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths), compared with 7 fatal crashes, resulting in 7 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 28.6 percent for fatal crashes, and 57.1 percent for fatalities.
