During the week of March 7, 2022, through March 13, 2022, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident while one of the drivers was under the age of 21.
So far in 2022, there have been 235 DUI arrests compared with 251 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 6.4 percent. There have been 147 major accidents in 2022 compared with 151 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 2.6 percent. To date, there were seven fatal crashes, resulting in nine fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths), compared with five fatal crashes, resulting in five fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 40 percent for fatal crashes, and 80 percent for fatalities.
