(AP) — The first whale of the humpback whale wintering season in Hawaiʻi has been spotted in waters off Maui. Go Fly Maui flight instructor Nick Moran and his students saw one off the coast of Hana. He told KITV that at first he thought they were looking at a shark. But then they saw a big gray shape come up and breathe and breach. The whales normally migrate to Hawaiʻi waters from Alaska starting in November and stay through April. Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary superintendent Allen Tom says it might be a little early for the whales but it’s not too early.
