During the week of September 13, 2021, through September 19, 2021, Hawai`i Island police arrested 13 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far in 2021, there have been 770 DUI arrests compared with 680 during the same period in 2020, an increase of 13.2 percent.
There have been 565 major accidents in 2021 compared with 548 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.1 percent.
To date, there were 16 fatal crashes, resulting in 16 fatalities, compared with 13 fatal crashes, resulting in 13 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 23.1 percent for fatal crashes, and 23.1 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
