Hilo Medical Center continues to operate well above capacity. As of August 31, 2021, there are 37 COVID patients currently hospitalized, out of those 30 are un-vaccinated. 9 patients are in the ICU with 8 on ventilators, while 28 are in the COVID Unit. The hospital’s ICU is exceeding its 11-bed capacity with 5 additional ICU patients on the Progressive Care Unit.
To manage the this current surge, a second wave of FEMA relief workers arrived and began orientation on Monday, August 30, 2021.
