Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski plans to retire after the 2021-22 season, ending one of the successful tenures in sports history. Former Blue Devils player and current associate head coach Jon Scheyer is expected to be named the next coach.
Krzyzewski, 74, started his tenure as a coach in 1975 at Army. His 1,170 career victories are the most in college basketball history. He has a 1,097-302 record in 41 seasons at Duke, and brought the school to a dozen Final Fours and won five national championships. Krzyzewski also coached the U,S. men’s basketball team to Olympic gold medals in 2008, 2012 and 2016.
The Blue Devils went 13-11 in 2020-21 and missed the NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball tournament for the first time since 1995. They won their first two games in the ACC Tournament, but withdrew from the event due to a positive COVID-19 test within the program.
