(AP) — A Hawaiʻi man has been sentenced to five years in prison for a car crash that killed a mother and injured three girls. West Hawaiʻi Today reports 26-year-old Nicholas Abarcar pleaded guilty in March to second-degree negligent homicide and three counts of second-degree negligent injury in the 2019 crash that killed Cassandra “Cassie” Lynn Ellis. He was sentenced Monday. A prosecutor says Abarcar was trying to connect his phone to his car’s speaker when he drifted into oncoming traffic. Abarcar’s attorney had asked for probation and community service for his client. He called the case one of distracted driving and said Abarcar is devastated.
