The State Department of Health has confirmed 46 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the state’s total to 21,028. These numbers reflect tests as of last Saturday. State DOH now reports all numbers two days late. Since Saturday was the day after Christmas, the number of new cases could be artificially low because of reduced numbers of people getting tested or lab results being delayed. In the past 14 days, the number of new cases has been 1,558.
The Big Island count increased by 2. The island has had 1,864 total cases of COVID-19, and 51 people are known to have died from the virus. The most recent death was reported yesterday by Hawaii County Civil Defense with. Statewide, the DOH is confirming 285 deaths from COVID.
Hawaii County Civil Defense says as of yesterday, there were 5 patients with severe COVID-19 cases in Big Island hospitals.
