Today during the State House update on University of Hawaii and Hawaii Community Colleges with UH President David Lassner, House Higher Education Committee member Representative Lynn DeCoite said that Aloha Stadium Authority just confirmed that the Stadium will close for three years.
She said any events currently scheduled at the stadium will be held, subject to COVID-19 restrictions.
The 50,000-seat stadium opened in 1975 and has hosted many types of large events–concerts, car shows, soccer matches, fair– including being the home stadium for the UH Warriors Football Team.
UH President David Lassner during the hearing said he himself had just learned of the closure. He said if the stadium cannot be used for the UH Warriors Football team, the University has to find another venue. Higher Education Committee Chair Gregg Takayama suggested the University might use one of the high school stadiums already set up for television broadcasts. Lassner said that will definitely be a consideration.
One of the upcoming events is the Hula Bowl, scheduled for Sunday, January 31.
During the COVID-19 crisis, Aloha Stadium’s parking lot has also been used as a COVID-19 testing site and a food distribution site.
