The new Safeway store at Niumalu Marketplace, off Henry Street and next to Lanihau Center, opens this morning at 8 a.m.
The 63,000-square foot Safeway is the only tenant in the shopping center, so far. Construction started just over 2 years ago and there are spaces for more than 20 other tenants. No other tenants have been announced yet.
On Wednesday afternoon, Kumu Keala Ching presided over the blessing and grand opening of the store. Employees have been working to get the store set up for the last two months, installing shelving and fixtures and stocking the shelves with food.

The new Safeway will be adding gas pumps, with the opening likely by June.
The former Safeway at the Crossroads Shopping Center up Henry Street just above Walmart is now closed.
