The Hawaii Island Food Basket will distribute food Thursday at the Old Kona Airport Pavilion, from 10 until noon, unless supplies run out sooner.
On Friday, the Food Basket will distribute food at Pahoa Community Center, and on Monday, at Kahuku Park in Ocean View, with both starting at 10 a.m. and going until noon if possible.
The Hawaii Island Food Basket, the island’s only food bank, is funded by individual donations and grants. They purchase the food at wholesale rates from local stores, and also get food from local farmers and ranchers. During the time of COVID-19, the entity switched from almost entirely providing food kitchens with food for distribution to direct distribution as many food kitchens had to close because of COVID-19. Kristin Frost Albrecht, Executive Director of the Foundation, says she and the team are committed to continue the direct distributions as long as possible. She says she is grateful for ongoing community support for those who are without jobs and means to feed their families.
