The State Department of Health is reporting 106 new cases of COVID-19 in the state. That number reflects data from Wednesday, Dec. 2. The State DOH now reports number two days in arrears. The total count of COVID-19 cases for the state is now 18,290. There have been 1,300 new cases in the past 14 days. Since last Saturday’s report (reflecting Thanksgiving Day numbers), the increase in cases was under 100 for 5 days, but with the holiday, the case increases from Saturday through Wednesday were likely artificially low. Yesterday the increase was 144.
O’ahu has 73 new cases, and there are 15 new cases on Maui, 4 new in Hawaii residents who are out of state, and 3 new on Kaua’i. There are no new cases on Lana’i nor Moloka’i. Kaua’i County Mayor Derek Kawakami says his island’s increase in cases is mostly due to travelers, since the resumption of travel on October 15 with no quarantine for those who take a pre-travel COVID-19 test and have a negative result.
Hawaii County has added 11 new cases. The Hawaii County total is now 1,613 cases of COVID-19. The Big Island has added 111 new cases in the past 14 days. Hawaii County Civil Defense says the bulk of the cases are community spread, not travel-related.
Ocean View has the highest positivity rate in those tested for OVID-19 at 6.8% within the last 14 days, but the State DOH chart says the number of new cases during the same time is fewer than 10. Positivity rate depends on the number of people getting tested compared to the number positive, and with a small number of people getting tested, the positivity rate may seem high, when it really reflects fewer people getting tested.
The state’s current positivity rate is 1.7%, and the Big Island’s is 1.3%, according to today’s State DOH charts, again reflecting Dec. 2 numbers. The CDC considers 2% or lower a manageable case rate.
The state has confirmed 256 deaths from COVID-19, which includes 41 of the Big Island’s 49 deaths. Hawaii County Civil Defense says there is one person on the island with COVID-19 in a hospital. Hilo Medical Center confirmed today it has one person hospitalized with COVID-19
