The State Department of Health has today confirmed 56 new cases of COVID-19 in the state, bringing the state total to 17,840. The State DOH is now including 34 of Hawaii Island’s deaths from COVID-19 in its official count, bringing the state death toll to 244.
Today’s increase could be artificially low because the numbers reflect the count on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. O’ahu has 46 new cases, Maui has 3 new cases, there are 2 new in Hawaii residents who are out of state, and Kaua’i has one new case.
Kaua’i Mayor Derek Kawakami says most of that island’s latest cases–32 in the past 14 days, and since mid October, the count has gone up by 51– are related to the reopening of trans-Pacific Travel on Oct. 15. He has gotten permission from Gov. David Ige to opt out of the state’s pre-testing program, and all travelers going to Kaua’i must quarantine for 14 days, no matter what.
The Big Island has added 4 new cases, bringing the island’s count to 1,595. There have been 123 new cases in the past 14 days, with 40 of them in Zip ode 96740 (Kailua Kona) and 15 in Zip code 96720 (Hilo). The rest of the new cases have been spread around the island.
