Thirty five of the states have an increasing number of cases.
In Hawaii, there are a total of 14,553 COVID-19 cases, with around 2,995 active.
Lanai has had a surge and has more than 65 cases in an island with a population of 3,000. Maui County Mike Victorino has announced a two-week island “stay-at-home” order starting Tuesday at 12:01 a.m., to try to stem the tide of the virus spread.
The other big increase in cases has been on the Big Island, which now has 1,170 cases, with 297 active cases. Mayor Harry Kim said the island’s positive cases are distributed throughout the districts, and are generally the result of gatherings. The rise in cases is not attributed to visitors, but to island residents–as Mayor Kim said, everybody must follow the mandate to wear masks, avoid large gatherings, distance from others, and wash hands frequently.
Elena Cabatu of Hilo Medical Center said many of the cases are in people 40 or younger, those less likely to need hospitalization. As of Saturday, Hawaii County Civil Defense reported 10 people are hospitalized on the island, spread among our island’s hospitals.
