The University of the Nations, which specializes in Christian education and training programs at its Kona campus, says Premier Medical Group, working with State Department of Health, completed COVID-19 testing 955 students, staff, and related contacts on Thursday.
Spokesman Johnny Gillespie confirmed there are 3 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19. That brings the total case count known to be associated with the religious entity to 37. At this point, a few have been released from isolation, meaning the Department of Health is no longer monitoring them.
University of the Nations brings in young people from around the country and world, and Gillespie confirmed that around 300 people arrived at the end of September. The first cases of COVID-19 confirmed to be associated with the University were confirmed October 3. At that time, Gillespie reported 4 cases were associated with travel, and 26 were community spread.
According to the press release, University of the Nations Kona is a global movement of Christians from many cultures, age groups, and Christian traditions, dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. Gillespie confirmed the virus was spreading through these efforts on the Big Island.
University of the Nations Kona has one facility on Kuakini Highway, across from Coconut Grove Marketplace. They also own the former Hukilau Hotel on Ali’i Drive, formerly connected with the Kona Seaside Hotel, and now home to YWAM (Youth with a Mission) Ships. They own several ships which they say they use to bring transformation to isolated communities, accessible only by ships. The YWAM Ships web site says they reached 231 isolated villages last year, bringing medical and other services to the residents.
