The Big Island is seeing its biggest daily increase in COVID-19 cases today, with 45 new cases. The island’s total is now 911, with approximately 206 active COVID-19 cases. There have been 36 deaths reported on the island, 1 in Kona and 35 in Hilo.
The University of the Nations says it has had a total of 44 cases, including 21 people who are isolated on campus and 19 people who live in the Kailua Kona community and are supposed to be isolated and not in contact with others. Johnny Gillespie, the University of the Nations’ Media Relations contacts, says 955 people affiliated with the religious institution have been tested at the campus, and results are back on 622 tests. Today’s media release says there were also 6 people living off campus who did not get tested at the campus but have tested positive.
Statewide, there are 155 new cases. The total case count statewide is 13,300. There are around 2,483 active COVID-19 cases.
There is one new case in a Hawaii resident who is out of state, one new case in Maui County, and 109 new cases on O’ahu.
The State Department of Health is reporting 166 total deaths, but that only includes 15 of the island’s known 36 deaths.
