The Big Island has 43 new cases of COVID-19, as confirmed in today’s State report. The state has added 133 total cases, with 87 on O’ahu and 3 on Maui.
The state’s new total is 12,734, with approximately 2,166 active. The State is reporting a total of 153 deaths, but still, that does not include 14 of the Big Island’s 29 deaths.
The Big Island has a total of 795 cases, with approximately 166 active. **Update at 1:30 p.m.: Mayor Harry Kim confirmed that the bulk of today’s 43 new cases are confined to two locations, University of the Nations and the Life Care Center of Hilo, making it easier to contain the spread. New West Broadcasting will provide additional detail later.
University of the Nations has confirmed 9 cases of COVID-19, with all patients isolating. University spokesman Johnny Gillespie said this morning that the University has its own medical team of doctors and nurses that are normally involved in ministering to the community as they work in other countries, who are now focused on helping the U of N staff and students who are infected. They are also working on contact tracing with the Department of Health. There have also been cases confirmed in other places in the West Hawaii community, but the virus is now widespread on the island, with community spread.
Kona Community Hospital reported that today they have 2 COVID-19 patients (down from 3 yesterday). Both are in the ICU, with one on a ventilator. Hilo Medical Center, as of noon today, has 12 COVID-19 patients. Hawaii County Civil Defense reported this morning there are 16 patients with COVID-19 hospitalized around the island. North Hawaii Community Hospital has not yet responded to an inquiry about how many patients with COVID-19 are in their facility.
Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim continues to urge people to wear masks, distance, and stay home. This virus can affect anybody of any age. The State Department of Health and the DOH on the island also urge people to please cooperate with contact tracers if they get called, as finding out who may have been exposed, and getting them.
Today’s total coronavirus on other islands include 11,452 on Oahu, 394 in Maui County, and 59 in Kauai County. There are also 34 Hawaii residents diagnosed outside of the state.
