The Hawai‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation announces the Gilbert Kahele Recreation Area (formerly the Mauna Kea Recreation Area) will be closed this Tuesday, October 6, 2020 from 4:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for vector control operations. Dustun Gomes, Maintenance Supervisor, said they’ll be spraying for ants and other insects.
Gomes said there is a close alternate location for restrooms, which is on the Mauna Loa side of the Mauna Kea Access Road, at the hunter station check in. Gomes said those portable luas are always available for public access.
Gomes also said his team has recently painted some of the facilities at the Gil Kahele Recreation Area, but sadly, some of the facilities–especially the restrooms– are getting vandalized with graffiti or worse.
