The Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard for Thursday, September 24, at 5:23 a.m.:

Worldwide cases: 31,944,038     Worldwide deaths: 977,881

U.S. cases: 6,941,248   U.S. deaths:  202,170

According to the Dashboard, the reported worldwide case report increased by 270,952 in the last 24 hours.  Deaths worldwide increased by  5,509.

According to the Johns Hopkins Dashboard, the United States has added 38,318 cases in the last 24 hours.  In that time,  the number of reported deaths from  COVID-19 increased by 1,050.

India, with a population of around 1.35 billion, has the second highest number of cases in the world, at 5,732,518.  It has lost 91,149 people to COVID-19.   The U.S. population is estimated at 327 million.

In Hawaii, the state has 11,689 COVID-19 cases.  The number of active cases is around 6,442.   On Wednesday the state added 168 new cases, after two days of only double-digit increases.  But the infection rate in the state is lower than at its peak in August.

The state on Wednesday reported 122 deaths, but that does not include all Hawaii County deaths.  Hawaii County has suffered the loss of 28 people because of COVID-19.  All but two are associated with the Yukio Okutsu Veterans Home.  The Veterans Home residents generally have underlying medical conditions which have made it more difficult for their bodies to fight off the virus.

The Big Island has 672 COVID-19 cases, with around 170 active.
