The Hawaii Food Basket, our island’s only food bank, will supply food today at Kea’au High School from 10 a.m. until noon, or until supplies run out, and Thursday at Waimea District Park, also 10 a.m. until noon. Volunteers and National Guard personnel will put the food directly into the vehicles’ back seat or trunk, so please have empty space there.
Hawaii Food Basket Executive Director Kristin Frost Albrecht says because of the high unemployment, the organization is spending as much every month as they used to spend in six months, but they are doing all they can to provide food for people in need. She says they are grateful for all monetary donations they get, but cannot accept direct food donations because of the COVID-19 concerns. She said they’ve also had people go directly to local grocers and purchase in bulk and have the Food Basket pick up directly from the stores. She also said the money they get is all spent locally, and that local stores are giving the Food Basket a wholesale discount. There is more at hawaiifoodbasket.org
