After four days of 20+ daily increases of COVID-19 cases in the state, today the state announced that 7 new cases have been confirmed. The state’s cumulative total is 1,030 with 781 released from isolation and monitoring by the State Department of Health.
Hawaii County has one new case, bringing the island’s cumulative case count to 94, and according to the State Department of Health, 87 have been released from isolation so it is still monitoring 7 active cases. Last week a case was confirmed in a server at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar, who was infected when her relative, subject to the 14-day mandatory travel quarantine and who had COVID-19, infected the server. Gertude’s owner Marlina Shirley said although no other employees had tested positive, the open-air restaurant/bar/performance venue on Ali’i Drive was going to shut down and reopen July 15. Shirley said the DOH did not require that, but that she as a responsible owner, wanted to ensure staff and patrons are safe and comfortable.
The other 6 new cases of COVID-19 are on O’ahu, which since June 1, 36 days, has gone from 421 cases to 750, an increase of 329 cases.
The state’s death toll stands at 19, with none new for more than a week.
The State’s Lt. Governor, Josh Green, also an emergency room doctor, in a Facebook post on Sunday, urged residents to wear masks and stay distanced from each other. He also expressed concern about a possible surge 8 to 10 days after the July 4 weekend if people did not follow the now well-known COVID-19 precautions.
