New York City, the most densely populated city in the country, is beginning to reopen its businesses today after hospital admissions have been down. New York’s Governor, Andrew Cuomo, urged everybody to be smart, and look at facts, and continue to wear masks and social distance. He pointed to California, Florida, Arizona, and Texas as states where people started getting out and the COVID-19 cases spiked. He also said he wants to have 35,000 people tested each day to closely monitor the situation.
Health officials have expressed concern about a possible uptick in cases after people protesting the death of George Floyd had large demonstrations nationwide. CDC Director Robert Redfield said last Thursday at a U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing that he recommends that people who have been close to large numbers of others get tested for COVID-19, to ensure they are protecting those with whom they live. He also said the coughing brought on by tear gas or pepper spray could also help spread the virus.
Locally, Lt. Gov. Dr. Josh Green has also recommended that those who have been close to others get tested, whether at social gatherings or Black Lives Matter demonstrations.
Hawaii saw an increase of 9 cases on both Friday and Saturday, and 2 cases on Sunday. Of the 9 cases on Saturday, State Health Department reports that 1 is a Hawaii resident who was diagnosed in Alaska, 6 are the members of one family, and 2 are in another family, both families in Waipahu.
The state also reports that there are now 3 cases in workers at senior living facilities.
The state’s total case count now is 675. Hawaii deaths stand at 17. The Big Island has no active cases, with 81 cumulative.
