The Wednesday morning,  June 3, Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard at 6:33 a.m.:

Worldwide cases: 6,435,453    Worldwide deaths:  382,093

U.S. cases: 1,839,167      U.S. deaths: 106,553

The U.S. cases increased by 21,382 and deaths increased by 1,078, both numbers being about average for the previous 12 days.

In Hawaii, with 653 cases and the lowest mortality rate in the country, there was only one new case yesterday, and in all of May there was never a day with more than 4 new cases.   Hawaii Island has no active cases, according to State Department of Health.  Gov. David Ige on Monday announced that interisland travel may resume on June 16 with no 14-day quarantine, although there will now be a requirement for health screenings at the airports and travelers will have to fill out a form with information on their intended location of stay and more.

The chart below is a look at COVID in some key countries.  The population data was from U.S. Census and other sources; COVID onset date for Brazil from virological. org;  COVID onset date for United Kingdom from the BBC;   COVID onset date for all other countries from the U.S. National Institutes of Health; COVID cases and deaths from the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 dashboard.  All numbers are approximate.  The data is listed in the order of size of population.

South Korea has been notable in its response to COVID-19.  According to an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), “Instead of deploying aggressive measures such as immigration control, lockdown, or roadblocks, South Korea mounted a trace, test, and treat strategy. This was made possible by the preparations that the country had made after the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) outbreak of 2015.”  The country has made widespread use of technology for tracing contacts, which has raised controversy over privacy concerns.
