The Hawaii State Department of Health says there is one new case of COVID-19 in the state today, on O’ahu, bringing the state’s case count to 635. State DOH says 563 have been released from isolation (ie no longer have symptoms as defined below, or left the jurisdiction, or died). The state’s death toll stands at 17.
Hawaii Island’s case count remains at 75, with 75 released from isolation. O’ahu now has 411 cases with 376 released from isolation. Maui County has 117, with 92 released from isolation. And Kaua’i has 21 cases, with 20 released from isolation.
The bulk of the cases are in those 40 to 59 (219) and 20 to 39 (215), but the highest percentage of those hospitalized are 60 or older. In that category, there have been 171 cases, and 51 of those people have been hospitalized. Children are not immune, but only 30 people 19 and younger in Hawaii have had COVID-19. However, on the mainland, several children have developed some complications similar to Kawasaki Disease or Kawasaki Syndrome, which can cause fever, rash, swelling of the hands and feet, irritation and redness of the whites of the eyes, swollen lymph glands in the neck, and irritation and inflammation of the mouth, lips, and throat.
State government and health officials have applauded how the community has worked to flatten the COVID-19 curve but remind everybody to continue physical distancing, wearing masks, and to wash hands frequently, and clean flat surfaces.
