Hawaii Island Food Basket will give away food today at Kahuku Park in Ocean View today from 10 until noon (or until the food is gone).
Other food giveaway sites on the island this week will be Wednesday at Afood Chinen Auditorium from 10 til noon, Thursday at Ho’okena Elementary School from 10 til noon, and Friday at Pahoa Community Center from 10 til noon.
Food Basket Executive Director Kristin Frost Albrecht says most food pantries and community feeding locations throughout the island have closed because of COVID-19. At these giveaway sites, people are asked to drive in and volunteers will put food in their cars to avoid person-to-person contact. Everybody should still have face coverings or masks.
The demand has grown for the services of the Food Basket. They welcome donations online at hawaiifoodbasket.org or via check to Hawaii Island Food Basket, 40 Holomua Street, Hilo, HI 96720. Their phone number is 808-933-6030.
