The Hawaii State Department of Health has reported 25 new cases of COVID-19 in the state since Tuesday. Of these, 16 were diagnosed in Honolulu, 3 on Hawaii Island, 6 in Maui County—which includes 2 cases on Maui, and none on Kaua’i.
The State report shows 26 cumulative cases in Hawaii County.
Out of the new total of 435, there have been 5 deaths. However, the State Department of Health says there has been a sixth death, on Maui, which will be included in the Thursday, April 9 report.
In today’s hearing before the State Senate, Lt. Gov. Dr. Josh Green confirmed that there are 15 positive COVID-19 cases in employees at Maui Memorial Medical Center, 8 of whom work in the oncology center. In a press release, Maui Mayor Michael Victorino said the County and State are working to get those workers into quarantine, away from their families. He also said there will be additional testing of workers at the hospital. State Department of Health Director Bruce Anderson said these cases have been reported over the past several weeks, several in March, and it was just today that it was determined that there was a connection through Maui Memorial Hospital. So these 15 are not new cases, but already in the totals.
There is now community spread. State Department of Health, the CDC, Lt. Gov. Josh Green, Gov. Ige, and Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim urge everybody to wear a mask if they go out and will be near others. Social distancing of at least 6 feet is critical, and everybody is urged to stay in their own home as much as possible.
On the island of Kaua’i, Mayor Derek Kawakami has instituted police and National Guard checkpoints to help enforce the state and county’s “stay at home” order, with only those with essential business out on the road.
